Common Dragonball misconceptions : (so here's the facts and some other factoids)
-Vegeta is five years older than Goku/Kakarrot
-Bulma's home/Capsule Corp. is NOT located in Satan City. It is in the West Capital City nearly half a continent away from Satan City (see map below).
-Gohan is 18 when he enters high school, not 16. 11+7=18
-Gohan is indeed 11 when he fights Cell. Technically he could also be 10, but one must count the year passed in the Room of Spirit & Time eventhough only a day passed on Earth. This also goes for Mirai Trunks' aging. He's roughly 22 when he returns to his own time and finally defeats the Androids and Cell there (he spent two days/years in the Room of Spirit & Time). He was 17 when he went into the past for the first time and 20 when he returns once again three years later.
-Goku is 24 years old when DBZ starts. He is 20 when Gohan is born.
-Goku doesn't age while dead/in heaven. So, his age will be younger than ChiChi eventhough they started out their life together at roughly the same age.

So, where exactly do these characters live?
Here is a map (not the greatest scanned, but it'll work for now) that highlights the three major region that impact main characters of the series. It'll give you a reference in distances say, Bulma and Goku live from each other.
In case you're wondering...this Earth doesn't exactly appear as the one we are familiar with.

Dragonball's Earth
The planet Earth in the Dragon Ball world is NOT like our Earth. It consists of one single continent (sort of like our ancient Pangea) and several islands of varying shape and size. There is no USA, no Japan, no countries or cities bearing names of any we know of on our own Earth. Some merchandise however looks suspiciously like that of our Earth such as Chevrolet, Porsche, an almost McDonald's, and so forth.

DB Money:
The unit of currency is the Zeni which is roughly equivalent to a USA dollar.

DB Food:
Here there are similarities to our Earth. Typical foods found on our planet are also on the DB Earth.

DB Housing:
Be it a residential or commercial building, it is likely to take on a round, dome, spherical shape. Many of which can be placed conveniently into a capsule and moved elsewhere.

DB Flora & Fauna
Animals and plants are similar to our Earth exist, only with slight mixes. There are also primeval creatures like dinosaurs and human/animal hybrids in the DB world.

DB Civilization:
There are six primary cities on this continent. Their names (well all but one) reflect where they are located on the massive continent. Each city functions as its own entity with its own police force, governing body, etc., but there are generalizations like a single overall government and military that serve the entire continent.

Smaller villages, towns, etc. are interspersed around the rest of the continent.

Central Capital City: found in the center of the continent, it is where most of the continent's government is located.

Western Capital City: Ultra-modern metropolis and one of the most, if not the most advanced city on the planet. The mighty economic powerhouse/buisness, Capsule Corporation resides here (as does Bulma and her family).

Southern Capital City: a smaller, resort-type city located near Papaya Island in the southern region.

Northern Capital City: another large metropolitan city

Eastern Capital City: This is the city Nappa originally levelled when he arrived with Vegeta on Earth. It was later rebuilt.

Satan City: Originally named Orange Star City, this metropolis is located just south of the Eastern Capital City. It was renamed when one of its residents, Mr. Satan became a planet saver and World Champion. Orange Star High School is also here and is where both Mr.Satan's daughter, Videl and later, Son Gohan attend school.

Capsule Corporation
This is perhaps the most powerful and most profitable business on the planet. Founded by Dr. Briefs, Bulma's father, this company's C-in-C logo can be found on a good portion of technology, vehicles, etc. seen in on Dragonball Earth. It is most noted for its space-saving devices known as Hoi poi capsules. You can put anything from house to plane in one of these things and carry it with you in your pocket! Bulma's first invention, the Dragon Radar is very popular amongst the Z Warriors when needing to find dragonballs in a hurry. Capsule Corporation products can be seen nearly everywhere in the Dragonball world.

The Briefs family is extremely wealthy as a result of Dr. Briefs creativity and skill. He is also one of the top if inventors on the planet. He later passes the company onto his daughter Bulma and the fortune she inherits is estimated to be more than she could dream of spending in three lifetimes! She assumes control of the company during the Buu saga. Roughly twenty years later by the time GT rolls around, her son, Trunks takes over presidency of the company with mom, Bulma overseeing and guiding as chairwoman. Her daughter, Bra is still too young to play any role in the company aside from spending lots of money on shopping sprees.

Factoring in the GT series, there are in fact, two Capsule Corporation buildings. I will denote them with a "I" and "II" respectively.

CCI serves as both a business and residence. It is the original Capsule Corporation building. Only in GT did it grow beyond its walls and ended up relocating to a huge skyscraper sized building (CCII) in another area of the city.Eventhough, CCI still appears to be functioning in some business aspects, perhaps as Bulma's private lab, archive and resources, etc. CCI is also the home of the Briefs family. The home part of the building resides above the business part of it. The map below shows how CCI is broken down.

CCII reflects the massive expansion and growth that the company had apparently seen after the Buu saga. It is unknown as to whether it was Bulma's decision to move the company or Trunks' when he assumed leadership of the company. Seen only in GT, this penis&balls-on a platform-shaped skyscraper is the now primary building for the company. Bulma's retired from active duty of running the place as her son, Trunks takes the reigns as president and launches the company into further success (hey, he's a royal saiyan...perhaps building a corporate empire?). He's well-liked and popular although rather young for a corporate president being only in his late twenties when the average president is in his/her late40's-50's in age. Bulma ran the company for a fairly short span, perhaps due to her desire to focus her time and energy on creating and inventing rather than all the meetings, paperwork, etc. Trunks doesn't seem overly fond of it either however, and is often seen ditching work, launching out of his office's window, and flying through the sky above. (I'll try to get a pic, etc. for this building in the near future). Needless to say, Capsule Corporation is going to be in business for many generations to come.

Dragonballs

There are three types of dragonballs found in the universe. All are 7 in number, orange, and sperhical.
Earth's:
These are softball-sized and contain red stars within. The dragon summoned is Shenron.
Shenron can only revive a person or group once and only if they did not die of natural causes. Only a single wish is granted before the dragonballs turn to stone for a year and scatter around the earth. Later, Dende, the new guardian of Earth gives Shenron a powerup allowing two wishes to be granted, but the same old rules still apply.

Namek's:
These are much larger dragonballs than the Earth's. They are roughly basketball sized though still contain red stars, but in a slightly different pattern than Earth's. The dragon summoned is the beefy, Porunga.

The summoning and wishes must be in the Namekian language however.

Porunga can grant 3 wishes before the balls turn to stone and scatter. They can't be used for another 130 days after.

Porunga can revive anyone as often as you like as long as they didn't die of natural causes. He can only revive one person per wish. If you need a group revived, you're better off with Earth's Shenlon.

Universe's (in GT only)
These are the dangerous black-star dragonballs. They are the same size as Earth's. The dragon summoned is a massive red-colored 'Shenron' who has powers similar to Earth's Shenron. There is a serious consequence to using these dragonballs however. Once used, they scatter throughout the universe. You'd better chase after them with a damn good spaceship because if not gathered and brought back to the planet they were used on within one year, that planet will be destroyed.

The Super Saiyan Levels:
Apparently the saiyans on Earth just can't be satisfied with what they attain. An ever stronger enemy always seems to be lurking just around the corner. Here are the levels saiyans have attained:

Level 1:
This is your standard super saiyan level. It's a powered up regular saiyan. The hair turns light yellow/blonde and the eyes green. The first time this tranformation occurs, the saiyan must have a powerlevel of over 100, 000 and be super angry. After the first time, this transformation is simple and done with ease.
Saiyans to reach this level: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, both Trunks, Brolli

Ultra-saiyan:
This is like level 1 1/2. It is a beefed up version of level 1 and not quite level 2. The muscle bulk increases dramatically and the hair is a little spikier than level 1, but speed is sacraficed making this form more sluggish due to the bulky muscles.
Saiyans to reach this level: Goku, Mirai Trunks, Brolli

Level 2:
During the Cell Games, an 11-year old Gohan was the first to attain this level. No other saiyan reached it until many years later in the Buu saga.
This level is much more powerful than level one. THe hair gets a little longer and spikier and is more golden in color. The muscles bulge more though nothing like ultra-saiyan. The eyes are still typical super saiyan green. There are little electrical bolts surging in the glowing aura that aren't present in the other forms. Speed is vastly increased as well.
Saiyans to reach this level: Gohan, Goku, Vegeta (in his possessed Majin Vegeta form).

Level 3:
This is the strongest of ss levels and one of the strangest. The golden spikey hair grows down past their waistline and the eyebrow ridges become more pronounced. The eyebrows disappear completely.
Saiyans to reach this level: only Goku and the fused warrior, Gotenks

Oozaru (giant were-ape)
This is the next level though not really a super saiyan level at all. This is the giant were-ape form that saiyans with tails intact can transform into upon seeing the light of a full moon, be it natural or artificial light. Saiyans look similar to a cross between King Kong and a baboon with brown fur and red eyes. In this form, saiyans have difficulty rationalizing and thinking. Their main motivation is to destroy.
All saiyans can reach this form provided they still have their tails. Only Vegeta, thanks to an invention by his mate, Bulma managed to reach this stage without a tail.

Level 4: (in GT only)
This is a debated super saiyan level. Many fans do not consider this a level at all, but since it did appear in the Dragonball world, I will consider it one anyway. This level can only be attained if a saiyan goes oozaru first and somehow regains control of their own minds. Once this is done, they can focus on the transformation necessary for level 4.
In level for, they shrink back to normal size once again. They regain their 'people' face but retain the fur. Their hair becomes a moderate spikey length but keeps the color it is when the saiyan is in normal powered down form. The eyes are outlined with reddish markings.
Only Goku, Vegeta, and in their fused form, Gogeta reach this level.

OTHER SPECIAL TRANSFORMTIONS

Fusion:
This can be accomplished two different ways. By use of Potara earrings given by a Kaio-shin (fusion's supposedly permanent with these though) or with a special fusion 'dance'. Two warriors can fuse into one more powerful one.

Using the earrings, Goku & Vegeta fused to form Vegetto (but the tranformation broke up while within Buu)

Using the dance:
Goku & Vegeta fused to become Gogeta
Goten & Trunks fused to become Gotenks

There is also a Namekian fusion. This fusion causes one Namek to be absorbed by another. Examples are Piccolo fusing with Nail though remained Piccolo and Kami fusing iwth Piccolo to again, remain Piccolo.

Mystic powerup:
This is a strange but immensly powerful upgrade given by an elderly Kaio-shin. Only Gohan had experienced this transformation during the Buu saga. He doesn't change in any physical appearance though he does look a bit more mature and confident. He doesn't even transform into a level 1 super saiyan. His powerup immediately jumps his power from normal to as high if not higher than a level 3 super saiyan. Sadly though, Gohan loses this powerup by GT.
